Last month I lost a lot of milk production because I detected mastitis too late in one of my best cows. 😞

What I've learned (the hard way):

Check udder before EVERY milking — just 30 seconds can save thousands of rupees
Use California Mastitis Test (CMT) kit — costs only ₹200 and can be used 50+ times
Strip cup test — first few streams of milk on a dark surface to check for clots/flakes

Excellent topic! As a vet, mastitis is the #1 cause of economic loss I see in dairy farms. Here's my comprehensive guide: EARLY DETECTION (Do these DAILY): 1. Strip cup test: First 3-4 streams on a black cloth/strip cup. Look for clots, flakes, watery milk, or blood tinge. 2. Palpation: Feel each quarter after milking. Any hardness, heat, or swelling = red flag. 3. CMT paddle test: Once a week minimum. Takes 2 minutes for all 4 quarters. TREATMENT PROTOCOL: - Subclinical (CMT positive, no visible symptoms): Frequent milking (every 4-6 hours) + intramammary antibiotics (Cephalexin or Moxifloxacin tubes) for 3 days - Clinical mild (clots/flakes, slight swelling): Above + systemic antibiotics (Inj. Ceftiofur 2mg/kg for 3 days) + anti-inflammatory (Inj. Meloxicam) - Clinical severe (hard, hot, painful quarter, fever): CALL A VET IMMEDIATELY. This can become gangrenous and fatal. PREVENTION: - Pre and post milking teat dip (Iodine-based) — NON-NEGOTIABLE - Dry cow therapy for ALL quarters at dry-off - Milking machine maintenance (vacuum level, pulsation) - Clean, dry bedding always - Milk infected cows LAST

Adding a home remedy that works for early stage: Turmeric paste application. Mix turmeric powder with a little coconut oil to make a paste. Apply on the affected quarter 3 times a day. Turmeric is a powerful natural anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial. I've successfully treated 3 cases of early mastitis with just this + frequent milking. But if fever develops, go to the vet immediately!

The most important thing that reduced mastitis in my farm from 8-10 cases/year to 1-2 cases/year: POST-MILKING TEAT DIP. I cannot stress this enough. I use 0.5% iodine solution. Cost: ₹200/month for 20 cows. Savings: ₹15,000-20,000/month in lost milk + treatment. Best ROI ever! Also, I changed from cloth wiping to paper towels (one per cow) for udder cleaning. Cross-contamination through cloth was a major issue I didn't realize.
