My journey: From 2 cows to 25 cows in 5 years 🐄📈
Namaste everyone! I want to share my dairy farming journey to inspire those who are just starting out. 🙏
2019: I was working a ₹15,000/month job in a small town in MP. My father had 2 desi cows that gave 3-4 liters each. We were barely breaking even.
2020 (Lockdown): Lost my job during COVID. Had no option but to focus on the cows. Started learning from YouTube videos and Facebook farming groups. Took a ₹50,000 loan from my uncle.
What I did:
- Sold the 2 desi cows and bought 2 pregnant Gir cows (₹35,000 each)
- Built a simple shed with proper ventilation (₹20,000)
- Started growing hybrid napier grass on 1 acre
- Connected directly with a local sweet shop for milk supply (cut out the middleman)
2021: 2 cows became 4 (calves). Milk production: 40 liters/day. Income: ₹40,000/month.
2022: Took a ₹2 lakh government dairy subsidy. Added 6 more cows. Total: 10 cows. Income: ₹80,000/month.
2023: Bought a small milk chilling unit (₹1.5 lakh). Started making paneer from surplus milk. Additional income: ₹15,000/month from paneer.
2024: 25 cows now. 200+ liters/day. Monthly income: ₹1.8-2 lakhs. Employed 2 helpers from the village.
Key lessons I learned:
- Quality over quantity — 1 good Gir gives more profit than 3 desi cows
- Direct marketing is everything — cut middlemen, connect with customers directly
- Value addition (paneer, ghee) doubles your profit
- Government schemes are genuinely helpful — apply for them!
- Never stop learning — every successful farmer I know is constantly learning
If I can do it, anyone can. Feel free to ask any questions! 💪🐄
